ARTrails Preview Exhibit & the Landscape Seascape show

Posted on September 17, 2011

ARTrails Preview Exhibit and the Landscape Seascape exhibit is on display through November 5, 2011 at the Pelican Art Gallery & Custom Framing. There are 45 pieces of artwork from oils and watercolor to steel and stone sculptures in the ARTrails preview exhibit. ARTrails is Sonoma County’s premier juried open studio event and this preview show has just some of the 130+ artists. Our preview show is a great way to discover your favorite Sonoma county artists and to help you decide which artists you just have to visit at their ARTrail Open Studios in October.

The Landscape Seascape exhibit contains over 30 plein air and studio paintings from Ray Roberts, Peggi Kroll Roberts, Carole Gray Weihman and Alfredo Tofanelli. They depict scenes from Sonoma County, California and across the country.

Ray Roberts has a couple seascape plein air sketches and and a beautiful landscape titled “California Pastures” depicting oaks in the rolling foothills. There’s also a beautiful limited edition of old town Petaluma in the rain. Ray Roberts is a member of the Plein Air Painters of America (P.A.P.A) and has just received Best of Show at the 2011 Maynard Dixon Country in Utah and also at the Plein Air Magazine’s Salon in July. Ray also recently taught at Weekend With the Masters put on by American Artists magazine.

Peggi Kroll Roberts has also received numerous awards including a Best of Show at the American Impressionist Society and the Laguna Plein Air Invitational. Kroll Roberts also teaches painting workshops around the country and just finished one here last week in Petaluma. She has taught one or two here each year since 2004. Kroll Roberts has some of her classic beach scenes of children and families on the beach and also some watercolor still-lifes on display for this show.

Carole Gray Weihman has received numerous awards at plein air events across the country. Gray Weihman was recently invited to paint at the Carmel Art Festival and also at Plein Air Magazine’s “Paint the Adirondacks” in New York. She is also featured in the October issue of American Art Collector magazine’s “Artist Focus”. Gray Weihman has a couple of the Adirondack paintings in this exhibit along with some Sonoma county scenes and various other beautiful scenes. The paintings range in size from 6″ x 6″ to 16″ x 8″.

Alfredo Tofanelli received best of show at the 2009 Plein Air Biennial, and has also had two Solo Exhibitions at the Napa Valley Museum with the current exhibit up through October 1, 2011. Tofanelli has also traveled around the country to participate in plein airs events and has received his share of awards including at the Carmel Art Festival and the North Tahoe Plein Air. Tofanelli has both seascapes and landscapes in the exhibit from Sonoma county and from around the country. His sizes range from 6″ x 8″ to a 20″ x 24″ Point Reyes seascape.

Pelican Art Gallery welcomes Nobee Kanayama as a Featured Artist.

Posted on May 06, 2011

Painting titled "Red Bicycle"

Red Bicycle by Nobee Kanayama

Nobee Kanayama and Carole Gray-Weihman are the featured artists at the Pelican Art Gallery through July 2nd, 2011. We’re happy to have Nobee as the newest edition to the gallery as he brings his own unique look. Nobee’s paintings come from his heart as he conveys the feeling of happiness through intimate views of his subjects. He paints mostly from memory after making simple sketches which are more about feelings and colors then of being a slave to his subject. He goes for the essence of his subject; not just portraying its physical qualities. Nobee’s painting assert the feeling of happiness and well being through color and texture.

Japanese born artist Nobee Kanayama came to the United States in 1977 at the age of 29 after working as a graphic designer in Tokyo. He first came to San Francisco and attended the Academy of Art where he studied for about 2 years. He then continued his advanced training at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, where he studied with Dan McCaw and John Asaro and received his Bachelor of Fine Arts. Dan had a profound affect on Nobee; instilling in him what it is to be an artist.

“Nobee’s art exemplifies the essence of a sensitive spirit that captures emotions far beyond that which the subject presents. His is an expression of truth that only could be painted by an artist with a pure heart. He is truly an undiscovered treasure and someone I am pleased to be able to call my friend.”
Dan McCaw

We continue our Masters of Today series presenting two incredible master artists in their exhibit going up on June7th.  Christopher Schink is editor of the Pallet Magazine and the author of Mastering Color and Design In Watercolor and Color And Light For The Watercolor Painter— both published by Watson-Guptill, NY. He is the co-author (with Skip Lawrence) of Watermedia Focus Workbook, Volume I.  Schink is an internationally renowned painting instructor and competition juror, having taught throughout the US, Australia, Europe, Mexico and Canada.  We are so lucky to have Topher as one of the Pelican Art Gallery Master artists! Celebration of South American Poetry, Music and Sharing

Posted on May 29, 2010

It was an incredible night here at Pelican Art Gallery, home of the Masters of Today visual artists.  We ventured into a beautiful bilingual evening of fantastic poetry and classical guitar.  Beatrice Lagos, an internationally known poet, decided that the people of Chile should receive help to recover from the 8.8 earthquake and tsunami from earlier this year, 2010.  She coordinated an incredible evening that included music from classical guitarist Mark Taylor.

Mark played several different pieces that set the tone of this emotional and heart warming demonstration of love and caring.   It was enjoyed by all.  One guest claimed that it was as though they were in the Lincoln Center in Washington, DC.  It was a wonderful international event!  Thanks Beatriz!!

Poetry Reading

I’m truly excited about this Saturday, May 8th.  We have 2 very fun and engaging activities.  First, at 2pm, we have our dear friend Katherine Hastings heading up a poetry reading, celebrating the Golden Anniversary Edition of Beatitude Magazine.  Katherine will be joined by Sonoma County Poet Laureate, Gwynn O’Gara.  The magazine was founded in 1959 by Bob Kaufman, Allen Ginsberg, John Kelley and William Margolis and helped launch the careers of many poets.  It is a loving tribute to over 50 years of North Beach poetry in San Francisco.

Painting Demo by Alfredo Tofanelli

Alfredo Tofanelli’s artwork is flowing and colorful.  Join us for a painting demonstration by Alfredo during the Art Walk  Saturday, May 8th from 4 – 7pm.  Alfredo teaches figure painting on Thursdays from the l’Atelier aux Couleur (the Petaluma Art Academy).
