Giant Steps is an amazing local non-profit organization that is the only year-round premier accredited therapeutic riding program in the North Bay Area. This Thursday, August 5th, from 5 – 7pm, the Petaluma Galleries & Merchants will be taking the best of Petaluma to the Sonoma Horse Park in support of the Giant Steps Charity Classic. It will be an evening of enchanting art and product presentation combined with hunter/jumper competition entertainment. This is one evening during the 4-day competition of world class horse & rider team events. We invite you to join us in this unusual and exciting opportunity.

The last 17 years, Pebble Beach has hosted a series of Grand Prix, hunter/jumper horse competitions. Due to the US Open Golf tournament this year, these competition weekends moved to the Sonoma Horse Park in our own backyard! Masters of Today featuring artists Christopher Schink and Camille Przewodek

We continue our Masters of Today series presenting two incredible master artists in their exhibit going up on June7th. Christopher Schink is editor of the Pallet Magazine and the author of Mastering Color and Design In Watercolor and Color And Light For The Watercolor Painter— both published by Watson-Guptill, NY. He is the co-author (with Skip Lawrence) of Watermedia Focus Workbook, Volume I. Schink is an internationally renowned painting instructor and competition juror, having taught throughout the US, Australia, Europe, Mexico and Canada. We are so lucky to have Topher as one of the Pelican Art Gallery Master artists! I met Topher at the Intensive Studies Seminar in Taos, New Mexico a few years ago and was blown away with his style and ease of putting paint to paper. When we found out he lived in Sonoma County we approached him about letting us represent him and were thrilled when he agreed!

Camille Przewodek, a nationally recognized painting instructor, offers classes and workshops from the l’Atelier aux Couleurs, the Petaluma Art Academy which she founded. Camille is a dedicated, no-nonsense leader in the arts in Petaluma. At the Petaluma Art Academy, Przewodek subscribes to the teachings and painting methods introduced to her by master artist Henry Hensche at the Cape Cod School of Art in Massachusetts. She is a passionate artist who excels in plein air and still life painting. Camille is a key addition to our list of proven master artists at the Gallery. She captures the beauty of the land in a way that evokes emotional response from viewers.

Masters of Today exhibit at the Pelican Art Gallery featuring Schink & Przewodek will include an artist reception on Saturday, June 12th, 2010 from 4 – 7pm as part of the Second Saturday Art Walk downtown. Schink will also be presenting a lecture on “The Roots of Modern Art” on Tuesday, June 8th at the Gallery at 6:30pm. Pelican Art Gallery has started a new Tech Talk series scheduled for Thursday June 10th and 17th. Call for details. Public is welcome to all events listed in this article. Exhibit runs through August 7th, 2010.

Celebration of South American Poetry, Music and Sharing

It was an incredible night here at Pelican Art Gallery, home of the Masters of Today visual artists. We ventured into a beautiful bilingual evening of fantastic poetry and classical guitar. Beatrice Lagos, an internationally known poet, decided that the people of Chile should receive help to recover from the 8.8 earthquake and tsunami from earlier this year, 2010. She coordinated an incredible evening that included music from classical guitarist Mark Taylor.

Mark played several different pieces that set the tone of this emotional and heart warming demonstration of love and caring. It was enjoyed by all. One guest claimed that it was as though they were in the Lincoln Center in Washington, DC. It was a wonderful international event! Thanks Beatriz!!

Poetry Reading

I’m truly excited about this Saturday, May 8th. We have 2 very fun and engaging activities. First, at 2pm, we have our dear friend Katherine Hastings heading up a poetry reading, celebrating the Golden Anniversary Edition of Beatitude Magazine. Katherine will be joined by Sonoma County Poet Laureate, Gwynn O’Gara. The magazine was founded in 1959 by Bob Kaufman, Allen Ginsberg, John Kelley and William Margolis and helped launch the careers of many poets. It is a loving tribute to over 50 years of North Beach poetry in San Francisco.

Painting Demo by Alfredo Tofanelli

Alfredo Tofanelli’s artwork is flowing and colorful. Join us for a painting demonstration by Alfredo during the Art Walk Saturday, May 8th from 4 – 7pm. Alfredo teaches figure painting on Thursdays from the l’Atelier aux Couleur (the Petaluma Art Academy).

Paris? NO!! It’s Petaluma “Early Evening” by Ray Roberts

When I first saw this painting, I was sure it was of Paris, France. The romantic light, the peppy shoppers, the wonderful energy. When I then recognized the clock tower at Petaluma Blvd and Western Avenue I was so delighted. Petaluma lovers should be sure to stop by and peek in the window to experience this master piece for yourselves!

Pelican Art presented 1st of Health Lectures

On Tuesday, April 20th, the gallery hosted an event through Jill be Nimble, an athletic training organization that helps promote proper physical and mental training. The evening included a presentation by sports psychologist Carrie Cheadle. Joy Hermsen was here from Jill be Nimble. It was a fun way to kick off our own training for the summer season. May 2010 Poets and Painting Demos

Next month will be very exciting at the Gallery. We have 2 poetry events, May 8th and May 27th. We also have 2 painting demonstrations lined up on May 8th and May 15th. On May 8th, our friend and poet, Katherine Hastings, will be among the poets presenting several poems from 2 – 4pm, just before Art Walk.

Just as exciting is the poetry to be presented by Chilean poet Beatrice Lagos on Thursday, May 27th. This evening event will include a bilingual celebration of poetry in support of the Chilean villages that suffered from last month’s earthquake.

On the painting demonstration side of things, Alfredo Tofanelli will be in the Gallery for Art walk on Saturday, May 8th from 4 – 7pm. He is a portrait artist who will be giving a demo on portrait paintings. On Saturday, May 15th, as part of the Salute to American Graffiti, Stanley Mouse will be creating more hot rod art right in front of our eyes from 1 – 4pm. Hope you mark your calendars!

Swoopy by Stanley Mouse

Stanley Mouse, best known for his posters of the 1960s music scene has created a new character named Swoopy. Stop by the Gallery to see Swoopy!!

This cute little character is the newest of Stanley’s creations. Having gotten so much positive feedback on Swoopy, Stanley intends to develop a series of paintings of this irresistible creature. Collectors should be quick to add this painting to your collection because it’s the first of the series!

Cinnabar event at Pelican Art Gallery a Success!

Cinnalounge is a special treat that the Cinnabar Theater puts on once during each of their shows for their $500+ members. It is a VIP event that includes a distinguished speaker along with food and libations. Yesterday, April 11th, 2010, at Pelican Art Gallery, we hosted Shelley Fisher Fishkin, professor of English and Director of American Studies at Stanford University and the author or editor of 34 books on Mark Twain, including Lighting Out for the Territory: Reflections on Mark Twain and American Culture, Was Huck Black? Mark Twain and African-American Voices, The 29-volume Oxford Mark Twain, Mark Twain’s Book of Animals (article about Twain’s animal welfare concerns) and The Mark Twain Anthology: Great Writers on his Life and Work. She is the scholar who recovered Mark Twain’s forgotten play “Is He Dead?” in the archives, published it, and guided it to a critically acclaimed first-ever run on Broadway in 2007– 08. She is a past president of the American Studies Association and the Mark Twain Circle of America.always an interesting.

It was incredibly interesting and very timely as much of her presentation was about art.

Stanley Mouse & Alfredo Tofanelli featured artists

A new show is now up at the Pelican Art Gallery featuring Stanley Mouse and Alfredo Tofanelli. We are so excited with this exhibit and the strength of the art. You’ll find 20+ piece from each of the featured artists.

This exhibit will be available in the Gallery through June 5th.
