Poetry & Painting

Poetry Reading

I’m truly excited about this Saturday, May 8th.  We have 2 very fun and engaging activities.  First, at 2pm, we have our dear friend Katherine Hastings heading up a poetry reading, celebrating the Golden Anniversary Edition of Beatitude Magazine.  Katherine will be joined by Sonoma County Poet Laureate, Gwynn O’Gara.  The magazine was founded in 1959 by Bob Kaufman, Allen Ginsberg, John Kelley and William Margolis and helped launch the careers of many poets.  It is a loving tribute to over 50 years of North Beach poetry in San Francisco.

Painting Demo by Alfredo Tofanelli

Alfredo Tofanelli’s artwork is flowing and colorful.  Join us for a painting demonstration by Alfredo during the Art Walk  Saturday, May 8th from 4 – 7pm.  Alfredo teaches figure painting on Thursdays from the l’Atelier aux Couleur (the Petaluma Art Academy).

May 2010 Poets and Painting Demos

Posted on April 21, 2010

Next month will be very exciting at the Gallery.  We have 2 poetry events, May 8th and May 27th.  We also have 2 painting demonstrations lined up on May 8th and May 15th.  On May 8th, our friend and poet, Katherine Hastings, will be among the poets presenting several poems from 2 – 4pm, just before Art Walk.

Just as exciting is the poetry to be presented by Chilean poet Beatrice Lagos on Thursday, May 27th.  This evening event will include a bilingual celebration of poetry in support of the Chilean villages that suffered from last month’s earthquake.

On the painting demonstration side of things, Alfredo Tofanelli will be in the Gallery for Art walk on Saturday, May 8th from 4 – 7pm.  He is a portrait artist who will be giving a demo on portrait paintings.  On Saturday, May 15th, as part of the Salute to American Graffiti, Stanley Mouse will be creating more hot rod art right in front of our eyes from 1 – 4pm.  Hope you mark your calendars!икони

Fine Art from the Masters of Today

Posted on April 03, 2010

I find it hard to believe that we’re already in April and the kickoff exhibition of the Pelican Art Gallery  Masters of Today is in its final day!  It has been a wonderful start to our representation of 11 incredible artists.

On Monday, April 5th, I’ll be hanging the next show which will feature Alfredo Tofanelli and Stanley Mouse.

He currently teaches head & figure painting at the Atelier aux Couleurs: the Art Academy in Petaluma. Linda Gonzalez Memorial Youth Art Walk

Posted on March 11, 2010

I was at the Gallery until near midnight last night finalizing the list of student art.  Yesterday the local high school teachers brought in a couple hundred pieces of art from their current students.  All the gallery owners and downtown merchants participating in this Saturday’s Art Walk were blown away by the quality of work.

You can see 4 examples at http://www.pelicanart.com/art/pelican-art-gallery-home/2010-youth-art-walk/.  The teachers are to be commended due to their dedication to these students.  Not only did they teach the classes, but they provided the artwork mounted, labeled and ready for hanging.  This is not a simple task and I hope that parents and students thank the art teachers at our high schools for putting in such a tremendous effort!

Please make time to participate in the Linda Gonzalez Memorial Youth Art Walk this Saturday from 4 – 7pm and see the sea of student artists with their families.  It’s really a fun experience to be around new artists who get a chance to participate in an exhibit of this caliber and size.  It will be worth it!

He has a long list of awards including the Gold Medal for “Best Painting” at the California Art Club and the Artists’ Choice Award, the highest accolade from fellow artists, at three major Southwest art events.

V-Day “A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant & A Prayer” at Pelican Art Gallery

Posted on February 21, 2010

We are very excited about this week’s performances of the V-Day “A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant & A Prayer” at Pelican Art Gallery Friday & Saturday, February 26th & 27th.  Trisha Almond, the amazing force behind the Petaluma V-Day involvement, has done a great job of orchestrating the 2 performances at the Gallery and the “Vagina Monologues” to be held at the Community Center on March 13th.

This year’s spotlight monologue, featured in V-Day Petaluma’s “A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant & A Prayer” and “The Vagina Monologues” productions, will be coming from Eve Ensler’s February 9 book release, “I Am An Emotional Creature: The Secret Life of Girls Around the World.”

You can find out more about the events at http://www.vdaypetaluma.org/.

Hope you join us in support of ending violence against women & girls.икони

Stanley Mouse Poster Helps Micky Hart with Haiti fundraiser

Posted on February 16, 2010

We’re very glad Stanley Mouse has joined us for the Resident Artist Program here at Pelican Art Gallery.

Heartbeat for Haiti Poster by Stanley Mouse

Poster for Heartbeat for Haiti on 2/13/2010

Stanley Mouse created this poster to assist Grateful Dead drummer Micky Hart with his fundraiser on 2/13/2010 called Heartbeat for Haiti.  At the Gallery the same night we raised $150 towards the cause.

As part of our current group show of our Masters of Today, Stanley provided the original painting that inspired the poster.  You can stop by the Gallery to see both the original painting and the signed poster.  It’s really amazing how much artwork Stanley donates to this type of fundraising.  We’re proud to represent such a wonderful artist.
